About the Program

Adult Literacy matches volunteers with learners to tutor them in basic reading, writing and math for English-speaking adults 19 years or older.

Volunteer Benefits

There is a sense of pride and contribution that comes with being a volunteer with our program. Watching learners gain new insight and confidence as they move forward is an extremely rewarding experience for our volunteers.

 

Our program can be used for volunteer hours for students needing community hours at the senior high school level. We can accept grade 12 students as volunteers or tutors for our learners providing the student demonstrates the needed communication skills, literacy skills, and competency needed to assist our learners.

Responsibilities

• Complete all tutor training sessions: The training includes an overview of our program’s philosophy, tutor responsibilities, procedures, available resources, and effective tutoring methods and techniques.

• Plan, conduct, and review lessons: Prepare lessons tailored to the learner’s goals and review them regularly to ensure progress.

• Maintain progress reports: Keep detailed records of the learner’s development, including the materials and methods used.

• Participate in ongoing evaluations: Work with staff to assess whether the learner’s needs are being met and adjust the learning plan as necessary.

 

How to Volunteer

• To become a volunteer you need to Be 19 years of age or older.

 

• Agree to a minimum termed commitment.

 

• Speak and write English fluently.

 

• Be fluent in written and spoken English.

 

• Show demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

 

• Have the ability to work well with others, especially people of different backgrounds
